Respect the site – don’t climb on buildings

Tucked away in the old town of Izki, Harat Al Yemen is a fascinating slice of Omani history. Unlike some restored neighborhoods, it’s largely untouched, with crumbling mud and stone buildings that give you an authentic sense of life centuries ago. Adjacent to Izki Castle and perched by Wadi Halfain, this neighborhood hints at the origins of Izki, likely one of the area’s earliest settlements.

I visited Harat Al Yemen as a stop on my way to Nizwa from Muscat. While it’s easy to find, Google Maps will try to take you down tight roads—drive carefully. When we arrived, the place was completely quiet. That stillness made it one of the most intriguing historical sites I’ve ever explored.


The neighborhood is uneven and some roofs are unstable, so exercise caution, especially with children. Dress modestly out of respect for local customs. Visiting doesn’t appear to require a fee, and daylight hours are best for exploring and photography.

How to Get There and What to Expect


Harat Al Yemen is located in the heart of Izki, about 130 km from Muscat, making it an easy stop if you’re on the road to Nizwa. Google Maps can take you there, but be prepared for some tight, winding roads, so drive carefully, especially if you’re in a larger car.

When you arrive, you’ll find free entry and a free car park near the site. The neighborhood is quiet and mostly abandoned, which is part of its charm. On my visit, no one else was there, making it feel incredibly authentic and peaceful.

Expect uneven ground, crumbling buildings, and unstable roofs, so take care when walking around. Harat Al Yemen is a living piece of history, so don’t climb on the structures and respect the local surroundings.

Visiting is best in the early morning or late afternoon, both for cooler temperatures and the best light for photography. Bring comfortable shoes, water, and a camera as you’ll want to capture the incredible old architecture and quiet atmosphere.
