Tokyo to Nikko by SPACIA X: Tickets, Prices & How to Book

If you just want the quickest explanation of how to take the SPACIA X from Tokyo to Nikko, this is what you need to know.

The SPACIA X departs from Tobu Asakusa Station in Tokyo.

I’ve seen a few websites recommending Klook, including some using affiliate links, but I personally wouldn’t recommend booking your SPACIA X tickets through them.

I originally tried to book my tickets with Klook. Long story short, I was charged twice and then my ticket was cancelled. It took around a week to get my money back.

That was my own experience, of course, but because of it I’d recommend booking directly through Tobu instead.

When you arrive at Tobu Asakusa Station, don’t simply go through the normal ticket barriers.

Show your Nikko Pass to the staff at the entrance beside the barriers.

You’ll then need to show your SPACIA X ticket to the train staff when required.

Keep your Nikko Pass handy during the journey too, because you’ll need to show it again when you arrive at Tobu-Nikko Station.

So, in simple terms:

Nikko Pass = base fare

SPACIA X ticket = reserved limited express seat

You need both.

Nikko is only around 125 km north of Tokyo, but arriving there feels like you've travelled much further. The skyscrapers and busy streets of Tokyo are replaced by mountains, forests, waterfalls and some of Japan's most impressive shrines and temples.

It's also surprisingly easy to get there.

There are several ways to travel from Tokyo to Nikko, including JR trains, cheaper local Tobu trains and direct limited express services. However, on my most recent trip to Japan, I decided to make the journey part of the experience and travelled on Tobu Railway's SPACIA X.

The SPACIA X is a limited express train running from Tokyo towards Nikko and Kinugawa Onsen. As well as normal train seats, it has Premium Seats, private compartments, sofa-style seating and the impressive Cockpit Lounge at the front of the train.

I travelled in both a Premium Seat and the Cockpit Lounge, so in this guide I'll explain how to get from Tokyo to Nikko, how SPACIA X tickets work, the different seats available and whether I think it's worth paying extra to take it.

For most visitors, I think travelling with Tobu Railway from Asakusa is one of the easiest options.

The fastest Tobu trains take around 1 hour 50 minutes, compared with at least around 2½ hours if you use the cheaper local and express services.

If you're happy to pay a little more, I'd choose the SPACIA X but it’s not expense and in my eyes an absolute bargain.

One of the morning services, for example, currently leaves Asakusa at 7:50 am and arrives at Tobu-Nikko at 9:39 am — a journey of just 1 hour 49 minutes.

That makes it perfectly possible to visit Nikko as a day trip from Tokyo, although personally I stayed overnight.

SPACIA X is Tobu Railway's flagship limited express train, introduced in 2023.

It operates from Asakusa towards Tobu-Nikko and Kinugawa Onsen, although it's worth checking the timetable carefully because not every SPACIA X service terminates at Tobu-Nikko.

The train has six cars and feels noticeably different from an ordinary commuter train. Instead of simply offering standard and first-class seating, there are six different types of seating ranging from regular seats to a private Cockpit Suite.

That was one of the reasons I wanted to take it.

Getting from Tokyo to Nikko is fairly straightforward anyway, so if I'm going to spend nearly two hours on a train, I'd rather make the journey slightly more interesting.

The easiest place for most tourists to board is Tobu Asakusa Station.

Be aware that this is not the same railway company as JR. You're looking for the Tobu Railway station in Asakusa.

SPACIA X services also stop at:

before continuing north towards Tochigi and eventually Nikko or Kinugawa Onsen.

If you're staying around Asakusa, Ueno or eastern Tokyo, the route is particularly convenient.

Allow approximately 1 hour 50 minutes from Asakusa to Tobu-Nikko.

At the time of writing, for example:

Asakusa — 7:50 am

Tobu-Nikko — 9:39 am

Asakusa — 9:00 am

Tobu-Nikko — 10:50 am

Asakusa — 10:00 am

Tobu-Nikko — 11:49 am

There are later services as well, although some SPACIA X trains head towards Kinugawa Onsen rather than Tobu-Nikko. Always check your individual service before booking.

If you're planning a Nikko day trip, I'd take one of the earliest trains possible.

This is probably the most confusing part of travelling on the SPACIA X.

You essentially need to think about your journey as having

two parts:

1. Your normal/base train fare

2. Your SPACIA X limited express ticket

If you choose one of the special seating areas, there can also be an additional special-seat charge.

This catches people out because buying the limited express reservation doesn't necessarily mean you've paid everything required for the journey. Tobu itself states that passengers on limited express trains also require a standard fare ticket.

Another option is to use a NIKKO PASS to cover the relevant normal fare and then purchase your SPACIA X limited express ticket separately.

The easiest way to remember it is:

You can buy SPACIA X limited express tickets online through Tobu Railway's ticketing service or at Tobu stations.

Tobu currently sells limited express tickets through its international TOBU Japan Trip Tickets website, while tickets are also available from ticket machines and staffed counters at Tobu stations.

The important thing is not to leave it too late if you want one of the unusual seats.

Reservations become available up to one month before the boarding date.

The Cockpit Lounge, Compartment and Cockpit Suite have very limited capacity, and reports from other travellers suggest the most desirable seats can disappear extremely quickly.

If I specifically wanted the Cockpit Lounge again, I'd book as soon as reservations opened.

For an ordinary Standard Seat, you have a better chance of finding availability closer to departure, but I still wouldn't rely on turning up at Asakusa and getting exactly the seat you want.

This is where the SPACIA X becomes much more interesting than simply getting on a normal train.

There are six different seating options.

This is the cheapest and most conventional SPACIA X experience.

The seats are arranged four across the carriage and still offer plenty of space. There are power outlets and tables large enough for food or a laptop.

If your priority is simply travelling to Nikko on the SPACIA X without spending unnecessarily, this is probably the seat to choose.

This was one of the seats I used.

Premium has a 2+1 seating arrangement, so the carriage feels much more spacious than Standard.

For solo travellers, the single seats are particularly appealing because you don't need to sit next to anyone.

I paid:

SPACIA X Premium Seat — ¥2,520 / £11.64 / $15.72 / €13.59

That made it a relatively inexpensive upgrade considering the journey is almost two hours.

Box Seats offer a little more privacy without requiring you to book an entire compartment.

They're designed for up to two people and carry an additional special-seat charge.

Tobu currently lists the Box Seat surcharge at ¥400 per box, on top of the normal fare and limited express charge.

This is the seat I'd choose if you want the most memorable SPACIA X experience without paying for a private room.

The Cockpit Lounge is located in Car 1 at the Nikko end of the train and feels more like a hotel lounge than a railway carriage.

Instead of rows of conventional train seats, there are chairs and sofas arranged around tables.

I paid:

SPACIA X Cockpit Lounge Seat — ¥2,640 / £12.19 / $16.46 / €14.24

For me, the relatively small difference in price compared with Premium made the Cockpit Lounge particularly good value.

Tobu's current special seating surcharge for the Cockpit Lounge varies depending on the seating arrangement:

1 person — ¥500

2 people — ¥1,000

4 people — ¥2,000

These charges are in addition to the applicable fare and limited express ticket.

If you're travelling as a family or small group, there are also private compartments accommodating up to four people.

The current special compartment charge is ¥8,000 per room, with the appropriate fares and limited express charges still required for each passenger.

At the top end is the Cockpit Suite.

This is a private room accommodating up to seven passengers and currently carries an ¥18,000 room charge, in addition to the individual fares and limited express charges.

It's obviously expensive for one or two people, but divided between a larger group it becomes considerably more reasonable.

Having travelled in both, I'd choose the Cockpit Lounge for the experience.

Premium is probably the better seat if your main priorities are having a large comfortable seat and relaxing for the journey.

The Cockpit Lounge is different.

It doesn't really feel like you're sitting on a train. The sofa and lounge-style layout makes it much more memorable, and there's another advantage: the café.

If I were taking SPACIA X for the first time and Cockpit Lounge seats were available, that's what I'd book.

If they were sold out, I'd be perfectly happy with Premium.

Another unusual feature of the train is the onboard café in the Cockpit Lounge.

The café sells drinks, snacks and products connected with the Nikko and Tochigi area, including coffee, local beer and other refreshments.

Passengers in the Cockpit Lounge have particularly easy access to it. Tobu states that passengers in the Cockpit Lounge and certain premium accommodation are given priority for café use.

You can also bring your own food and drinks onto the train, so there's nothing stopping you from picking up a bento or snacks in Tokyo before boarding.

Travelling with luggage shouldn't be a major problem.

The train has luggage storage, and some dedicated storage areas can be secured using an IC card.

This makes the SPACIA X particularly useful if Nikko isn't simply a day trip and you're travelling there with an overnight bag or suitcase.

Yes you will need it to take the train to Nikko.

Tobu currently offers two main passes for international visitors.

¥3,000 / approximately £13.90 / $18.70 / €16.20

Valid for up to two consecutive days.

This is aimed primarily at visitors exploring Nikko's World Heritage area and includes a round trip from Asakusa as well as designated transport around the Nikko area.

Importantly, it does not include your SPACIA X limited express ticket. You still need to purchase that separately.

For a short trip focusing on central Nikko's shrines and temples, this is probably the one I'd look at first.

¥8,000 / approximately £37 / $50 / €43

Valid for up to four consecutive days.

This covers a much larger area, including transport towards places such as Lake Chuzenji and Oku-Nikko, as well as buses around Nikko.

Again, the SPACIA X limited express ticket is not included.

I'd only choose this over the World Heritage version if you're genuinely planning to explore beyond central Nikko.

No.

The SPACIA X is operated by Tobu Railway, not JR, so a standard Japan Rail Pass doesn't cover the journey.

If you already have a JR Pass and want to maximise its value, there is another way to reach Nikko.

From Tokyo or Ueno Station you can take the Tohoku Shinkansen to Utsunomiya and change there for the JR Nikko Line.

The journey takes around 100 minutes with a good connection, but without a JR Pass it can cost roughly ¥5,500 one way, making it considerably more expensive than the Tobu options.

If you already have a nationwide JR Pass, this route makes much more sense.

Otherwise, I'd take Tobu.

You don't have to take a limited express train at all.

Tobu's slower express and local trains can get you from Asakusa to Nikko for considerably less money.

The trade-off is time and convenience.

Instead of a direct journey of around 1 hour 50 minutes, local trains can take at least half an hour longer and may require several changes.

If I were travelling Japan on the tightest possible budget, I'd consider it.

For a holiday, though, I'd pay extra for the limited express.

Saving an hour or more across the return journey gives you more time in Nikko, and that's before considering how much nicer the SPACIA X itself is.

One thing worth knowing is that Tobu-Nikko Station and JR Nikko Station are different stations.

They're only around 200 metres apart, so this isn't a major problem, but it's useful when using Google Maps or arranging accommodation.

The main collection of temples and shrines is around two kilometres from the railway stations.

You can walk there in approximately 30–40 minutes, or take a bus in around 10 minutes.

If you're heading straight for the World Heritage area, taking the bus towards Shinkyo is the easiest option.

Yes.

If your main priority is seeing Shinkyo Bridge, Toshogu Shrine and the other temples and shrines around central Nikko, a day trip is completely realistic.

The SPACIA X makes it even easier because you can leave Tokyo early in the morning and be in Nikko before 10 am.

However, Nikko is much more than its famous shrines.

Once you start adding Lake Chuzenji, Kegon Falls, hiking and Oku-Nikko, everything becomes considerably more spread out.

This is where I'd consider staying overnight.

It's a similar conclusion other travellers come to: central Nikko works well as a day trip, while combining the temples with the lakes and waterfalls can make the day feel rushed.

I stayed overnight myself, which meant I didn't have to spend the entire day thinking about getting back to Tokyo.

For me, yes.

There are cheaper ways of getting from Tokyo to Nikko, and if all you care about is reaching your destination for as little money as possible, you don't need the SPACIA X.

But that's not really the point of it.

Japan is one of those countries where the transport can become part of the trip itself, and the SPACIA X is a good example.

It takes you directly from Asakusa towards Nikko in around 1 hour 50 minutes, the train is extremely comfortable, and some of the more unusual seating options don't require spending a ridiculous amount of money.

I particularly liked the Cockpit Lounge.

If the choice was between saving a relatively small amount of money on a normal train or spending a little more to sit in the Cockpit Lounge for almost two hours, I'd choose the SPACIA X again.

If I were planning the journey again, I'd keep it simple:

I'd try to reserve the Cockpit Lounge as soon as booking opens. If that wasn't available, I'd choose a Premium Seat.

For a short visit concentrating on the temples and shrines, I'd also look at the NIKKO PASS World Heritage Area, remembering that the SPACIA X limited express reservation still needs to be purchased separately.

And if you're visiting Nikko as a day trip, take an early train.

Getting into Tobu-Nikko at around 9:30–10:00 am gives you far more time to explore before returning to Tokyo.

The SPACIA X isn't the absolute cheapest way to get to Nikko.

But for me, it's probably the best.

The main departure point is Tobu Asakusa Station. Services also stop at Tokyo Skytree and Kita-senju before continuing north.

The journey from Asakusa to Tobu-Nikko takes approximately 1 hour 50 minutes, depending on the service.

Having travelled in both, the Cockpit Lounge would be my first choice next time.
