Is Ljubljana Worth Visiting?

Yes, Ljubljana is absolutely worth visiting. The city might not be as famous as some European capitals, but that's part of its appeal. It offers a laid-back atmosphere, stunning architecture, and an abundance of green spaces. Plus, it is incredibly easy to explore on foot, making it perfect for those looking for a relaxed yet fulfilling city break.

One of the best things about Ljubljana is its ability to balance modern life with history. Despite being small, it is a cultural treasure trove with world-class museums, a vibrant food scene, and a captivating old town filled with charming streets and hidden corners.

Ljubljana also has a youthful spirit, with a large student population contributing to the city's lively café culture and buzzing nightlife. Whether you're interested in history, art, or simply soaking up the local atmosphere, Ljubljana offers plenty to keep you engaged.

Keep in mind that Ljubljana is a small city, and after a full day of exploring, you might find yourself running out of things to do. My suggestion—an obvious one—is to take a day trip to Lake Bled. There are frequent buses to the lake, and you'll be back in Ljubljana in time for dinner.

What to Do in Ljubljana

Stroll Along the Ljubljanica River

The Ljubljanica River is the beating heart of the city, and a walk along its banks offers a perfect introduction to Ljubljana. Lined with picturesque buildings, quaint cafés, and elegant bridges, this area is incredibly scenic. A favorite spot for both locals and tourists, the river is especially beautiful at dusk when the city’s lights reflect off the water, creating a magical ambiance.

A fun way to experience the river is to take a boat tour. These cruises offer a unique perspective of the city and are a great way to see some of Ljubljana’s most iconic landmarks from the water.

Visit Ljubljana Castle

Perched on a hilltop overlooking the city, Ljubljana Castle is one of the most iconic landmarks in the capital. Dating back to the 11th century, the castle has served many roles over the centuries—from a medieval fortress to a symbol of Slovenia’s independence.

Today, the castle is a popular tourist attraction, offering spectacular views of the city and surrounding landscapes. You can reach the castle via a funicular railway or by hiking up the hill. Inside the castle, you’ll find interactive exhibits, a museum, a medieval tower, and a café with panoramic views of Ljubljana.

Explore Tivoli Park

Tivoli Park is Ljubljana's largest and most beautiful park, offering a serene escape from the city’s bustling center. With its expansive green lawns, tree-lined avenues, and tranquil ponds, it’s the perfect place to relax, have a picnic, or take a leisurely stroll.

The park also has several walking trails, gardens, and even a small botanical garden. If you’re traveling with children, Tivoli Park has playgrounds and space for outdoor activities. The park is just a short walk from the city center, making it easy to visit during your stay.

Walk Through Ljubljana’s Old Town

Ljubljana’s Old Town is a charming maze of narrow cobblestone streets, colorful buildings, and cozy squares. The area is packed with historical landmarks, such as the Town Hall (Magistrat) and the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation.

A key highlight is Prešeren Square, named after Slovenia's greatest poet, France Prešeren. This square is the heart of Ljubljana and the starting point for many of the city's major attractions. From here, you can easily explore the nearby sights, including the Triple Bridge (Tromostovje), a unique structure designed by architect Jože Plečnik, and the Central Market, where you can browse fresh produce, local crafts, and souvenirs.

Admire the Architecture

Ljubljana is a city that effortlessly blends styles from various periods, from medieval to Baroque, Art Nouveau, and modern. The city's most famous architect, Jože Plečnik, is credited with shaping much of Ljubljana’s urban landscape. His works can be seen throughout the city, particularly in the iconic bridges and the Ljubljana Castle’s surrounding area.

Don't miss the chance to admire Plečnik’s creations, such as the picturesque Zmajski Most (Dragon Bridge), with its famous dragon statues, or the Ljubljana Central Market, which he also designed. His influence is also visible in the National and University Library, where you can admire a blend of classic and contemporary design elements.

Discover Ljubljana’s Museums

If you’re a fan of art and history, Ljubljana boasts a number of excellent museums. The National Gallery of Slovenia is home to a vast collection of Slovenian art, from the medieval period to modern works. For a deeper dive into Slovenian history and culture, the Museum of Contemporary History is a must-visit, with exhibits on the country’s 20th-century history and its journey to independence.

The Slovenian Museum of Natural History is perfect for those interested in geology, paleontology, and the country’s biodiversity. Meanwhile, the Museum of Illusions offers an interactive experience filled with optical illusions and mind-bending exhibits, making it a fun stop for families and groups.

Where to Stay in Ljubljana?

Ljubljana offers a wide range of accommodation options, from budget hostels to luxury hotels. No matter your budget, you’ll find a place that suits your needs. I stayed at the Eurostars uHotel, which is very central and felt like decent value for money.

Here are some other popular options:

Central and Boutique Hotels

If you're looking to stay close to the main attractions, there are plenty of boutique hotels and central accommodations. The Grand Hotel Union is one of Ljubljana’s most famous hotels, offering a blend of classic luxury and modern amenities. For a more intimate experience, check out the Vander Urbani Resort, a boutique hotel with a stylish rooftop pool and a great location by the river.

Budget and Mid-Range Hotels

For more affordable options, check out the Hotel Emonec, which offers simple yet comfortable rooms in the heart of the Old Town. The M Hostel is another great budget option for those looking for a relaxed atmosphere and easy access to the city center.

Airbnb and Apartments

If you prefer a homey feel, consider renting an apartment or using Airbnb. There are plenty of lovely apartments available throughout Ljubljana, many of which are in charming, historic buildings.

Where to Eat in Ljubljana?

Slovenian cuisine is an exciting fusion of Central European influences, and Ljubljana has no shortage of great places to eat.

Traditional Slovenian Food

For a true taste of Slovenia, head to Gostilna Sokol, a traditional Slovenian restaurant known for its hearty dishes like “žganci” (buckwheat mush), “jota” (a stew made with sauerkraut), and “potica” (a traditional nut roll). Another excellent option is Ljubljana’s oldest restaurant, Julija, which offers a mix of Slovenian and Mediterranean cuisine. I would go as far to say that the meal I had at Julija was one of the best of the year (top 10 at least).

Contemporary Dining

If you’re in the mood for something more modern, head to the fine-dining restaurant Atelje, where chef Jorg Zupan combines Slovenian ingredients with international techniques. For a trendy experience, try the Restaurant Strelec, located in Ljubljana Castle, offering seasonal menus and stunning views.

Cafés and Casual Eats

Ljubljana is full of cozy cafés, where you can enjoy a cup of coffee and a pastry. Try Café Čokl for a delicious hot chocolate or take a seat at the riverfront Café and Patisserie Zvezda for freshly baked treats and great people-watching.
