How to Visit Monaco on a Budget: Tips for an Affordable Day Trip from Nice

Visiting Monaco has always been something I was interested in, but it isn’t really a standalone destination. Unless you’re a millionaire flying in by helicopter, the easiest way to get there is via Nice. During a trip along the French Riviera, where I explored all the beautiful beach towns, I dedicated one day to visiting Monaco. The city is renowned for its millionaires, billionaires, and the Formula 1 Grand Prix. Not being particularly interested in luxury lifestyles or F1, Monaco might not seem like my usual kind of place. However, on my quest to visit all European countries, Monaco was a must-see.

My Airbnb in Nice was conveniently located next to the train station, which follows the coastline and eventually arrives in Monaco. Using the British train line app, I booked a return ticket from Nice to Monaco for around 5–6 euros. Prices vary, but even the most expensive tickets are quite reasonable. The train ride itself is short, lasting about 14–18 minutes, and offers stunning views of the Mediterranean coast. The line services many small beach towns and villages, which can get crowded during the summer months. On some occasions, trains were so full that boarding was nearly impossible, and I’ve heard that pickpockets sometimes take advantage of the chaos. On this trip, I left early in the morning to avoid the crowds, making for a pleasant, stress-free ride.

Upon arriving in Monaco, my plan was simple: explore on foot and enjoy the city without spending money on paid attractions. The day was sunny and beautiful, perfect for walking around. I strolled along the marina, taking in the luxury yachts, then used a very affordable water taxi for a short ride across the harbor. From there, I wandered through Monaco-Ville, the old town, exploring the narrow streets near the fort and taking in the breathtaking views of the city below. I had packed water and snacks from my Airbnb in Nice, so the only money I spent was on a coffee and croissant at the train station, keeping the day trip extremely cheap.

Monaco is incredibly clean, organized, and feels very safe. It is easy to navigate thanks to public escalators and lifts connecting different parts of the city. An unusual observation I had is that the whole city smells pleasant, from the walkways to the public lifts, which adds to the surprisingly refreshing atmosphere.
