Gili Meno Travel Guide (2026): Is It Worth Visiting, What to Do, Costs, Beaches & How to Plan Your Trip

Gili Meno is the quietest of the three Gili Islands, and that is exactly why some people will love it and others will find it too slow. If you are looking for beach clubs, nightlife, shopping, and loads of choice, Gili Meno is probably not the best fit. If you want clear water, empty beaches, turtle-filled snorkelling, peaceful mornings, and a much slower pace than Bali, it can easily end up being your favourite island in Indonesia.

This is my main Gili Meno guide, built from all of my more detailed blogs about the island. Rather than repeating every single thing in full, this page gives you the most important information in one place: what Gili Meno is actually like, how many days to stay, what to do, how much it costs, where to watch sunrise and sunset, and how to get there from Bali or Lombok.

If you want a deeper breakdown on any specific part of the trip, I have linked to the full individual guides throughout this page.

Quick answer

  • Gili Meno is best for couples, quieter travellers, beach lovers, and anyone wanting a slower island escape.
  • The standout experiences are shore snorkelling, sea turtles, the Nest underwater statues, quiet beaches, sunrise on the east coast, and sunset on the west coast.
  • For most people, 2 nights / 3 days is the sweet spot.
  • It is quieter and less convenient than Gili Air or Gili Trawangan, but that is also exactly what makes it special.

Convenience stores on Gili Meno

Gili Meno does have a couple of small convenience-style shops, but don’t expect the same choice you would get in Bali. For basic snacks, drinks, toiletries, and emergency bits, the most useful places I found were the local mini markets near the main harbour area.

One very useful detail that does not seem to be listed anywhere online is that the “Mart” branded store is open 24 hours, according to the cashier when I asked. Rust Mini Market usually opens from 7:30am to 10pm, although in reality, someone is often there earlier cleaning the shop and may still let you buy something if you are up early.

This might sound like a small detail, but on a quiet island like Gili Meno, knowing where you can buy water, snacks, or basic supplies late at night or early in the morning is genuinely useful.

Is Gili Meno worth visiting?

Yes, absolutely — but only if you want what Gili Meno is actually good at. This is not the island you choose for nightlife, variety, or a packed itinerary. It is the island you choose for peace, clear water, easy snorkelling, and a much more untouched feel than the other two Gilis.

What makes Gili Meno special is how quiet it feels. You can walk along huge stretches of beach and barely see anyone, especially on the south side. There are no cars or motorbikes, very little noise, and the whole island moves at a slower pace. Even the evenings feel calm, with a handful of restaurants and bars rather than big beach clubs and crowds.

The downside is that it can feel too quiet for some people. Restaurant choice is more limited, logistics are a bit less convenient, and after a couple of days you will probably feel like you have seen most of the island. Personally, that was not a negative for me at all. Gili Meno felt like paradise.

Who Gili Meno is best for

Best for

Couples, quieter travellers, people escaping busy Bali, and anyone who wants beach time, snorkelling, turtle encounters, and slower days.

Not ideal for

Solo travellers wanting to meet lots of people, anyone chasing nightlife, and travellers who need constant variety and activity.

Compared with the other islands, Gili Air is the middle ground and Gili Trawangan is the social, busy one. Gili Meno is the complete opposite of Gili T in terms of atmosphere. That is the easiest way to think about it.

How many days should you stay in Gili Meno?

For most travellers, the answer is 1 to 3 days, with 2 nights / 3 days being the sweet spot. Gili Meno is small enough that you can walk around it in roughly 90 minutes, so this is not somewhere that needs a long stay unless your whole goal is pure relaxation.

1 day

Enough to get a feel for the island, walk or cycle around it, spend a few hours on the beach, snorkel from shore, and catch sunset if you stay overnight.

2 days

The best option for most people. You have enough time to slow down, enjoy a proper beach day, snorkel, watch sunrise or sunset, and not feel like you are rushing.

My honest take: 3 days is perfect if you really want to switch off, but a full week would feel too long for most people unless you are specifically going there to do very little.

If you are staying on Gili T or Gili Air, Gili Meno also works well as a shorter escape. If you are travelling all the way from Bali specifically for Meno, it makes more sense to give it at least 2 nights.

Best things to do in Gili Meno

Gili Meno is often described as somewhere you only go to relax, but that undersells it. Yes, it is peaceful, but there is still plenty to fill your days if you like beach-based travel. The difference is that the best things to do here are all built around the sea and the island’s slower rhythm.

1. Spend proper time on the beaches

On Gili Meno, beach time is not filler between activities. It is one of the main activities. Some beaches are better than others for swimming, but the southeast side is one of the nicest all-round options for a sandy, relaxed beach day.

2. Snorkel with turtles from the beach

This is one of the best reasons to come. In the right spots, you do not even need a boat trip. You can just walk into the sea with a mask and snorkel and have a realistic chance of seeing turtles.

3. See the Nest underwater statues

This is Gili Meno’s most famous snorkelling attraction. It is worth seeing, but go early if you can. Crowds make it much less enjoyable, and honestly, a bit more chaotic than it needs to be.

4. Take a snorkelling boat trip

Even though shore snorkelling is excellent, a boat trip gives you more variety and lets you combine statues, turtle spots, coral gardens, and other underwater areas around the Gilis. Shared trips are often around IDR 180,000–200,000 (£9–£10 / $11–$13) per person, while private trips cost much more depending on the boat and duration.

5. Walk or cycle around the island

Because there are no cars or motorbikes, this is one of the nicest things to do. The island is small enough to explore slowly, and wandering without much of a plan really suits Gili Meno. Bike rental is usually around IDR 50,000 per day (about £2.50 / $3.15).

6. Watch sunset on the west coast

Sunset is one of the best moments of the day on Gili Meno, especially because it feels more low-key and less crowded than Gili Trawangan.

7. Get up for sunrise on the east side

Sunrise is quieter, softer, and honestly one of the best ways to experience the island at its most peaceful.

Best sunrise and sunset spots in Gili Meno

The simple answer is east for sunrise, west for sunset. That sounds obvious, but on Gili Meno it really does make a difference because the island is small and the atmosphere changes depending on which side you are on.

Best sunrise side: east coast

The east coast faces Lombok, so you get that first light over the water and mountains. It also tends to feel calmer in the morning, with softer water and fewer people. Seri Beach, the area around the port, and the quieter east coast beaches just north and south of it are all good options.

Best sunset side: west coast

The west coast is the classic sunset side, with warmer light, better colours, and views out towards Gili Trawangan. You do not need some secret viewpoint either. A simple west-facing beach is enough.

Where should you stay?

You do not need to stay directly on one side of the island. Gili Meno is small enough that staying somewhere central works well, especially if you want easy access to both sunrise and sunset.

How much does Gili Meno cost?

Gili Meno can be done on a budget, but it is not as cheap as some people expect. The biggest costs are usually transport to the island and accommodation, while food can still be very reasonable.

Budget traveller

Roughly IDR 260,000–620,000 per day (£13–£31 / $16–$39). This means simple accommodation, cheap warungs, and minimal extras.

Mid-range traveller

Roughly IDR 750,000–2,000,000 per day (£38–£100 / $47–$126). This is where most people will land with a comfortable stay, restaurant meals, and some activities.

Food

Local warungs can be very cheap, with meals from around IDR 30,000 (£1.50 / $1.90). Mid-range restaurant meals are usually more like IDR 80,000–120,000 (£4–£6 / $5–$7.60). Drinks can raise the cost quickly, especially cocktails, which are often around IDR 130,000–150,000 (£6.50–£7.50 / $8.20–$9.50).

Hotels

Budget guesthouses can start around IDR 200,000–400,000 (£10–£20 / $13–$25). Mid-range places are more commonly IDR 500,000–1,200,000 (£25–£60 / $32–$76). Boutique and nicer stays push higher than that, often from IDR 1,200,000+ (£60+ / $76+).

Cash and ATMs

From my experience, there is basically one ATM on the island next to the ferry terminal. I would not rely on it completely. Bring enough cash from Bali or Lombok just in case.

How to get to Gili Meno

For most travellers coming from Bali, the easiest option is a fast boat from Padang Bai. If you are staying in Ubud, Sidemen, Candidasa, or East Bali, this is usually the best balance of speed and convenience.

If you are staying in South Bali, Serangan can make more sense on the land side, but the crossing is usually longer. If you are already in Lombok, then the journey is much easier and quicker.

The important thing about Gili Meno

This is the island where people get caught out most often. Not every booking that says “Gili Islands” is the same, and not every boat truly reaches Gili Meno in the simple direct way people imagine. Some routes stop at Gili Trawangan first, and some use a smaller local transfer boat to finish the journey.

My honest advice

Double-check the final route before you book, build in some buffer time, and do not rely on a same-day tight connection. Boat changes and cancellations do happen. A fast boat from Bali is often around £33–£53 ($42–$67 / roughly IDR 660,000–1,060,000) depending on company and whether you are booking one-way or return.

Where to stay in Gili Meno

If your goal is sunrise and sunset, you do not need to obsess over being on one exact side of the island. Gili Meno is so small that a more central location can actually work really well.

I stayed at Gili Meno Escape, and it was a fantastic base. Quiet, well-designed, and very suited to the island’s slower pace. My stay was around £70 per night ($88 / about IDR 1,400,000).

If you are taking an early ferry from Bali, staying near Padang Bai the night before can also make the journey much easier. I stayed at OK Divers Resort & Spa before my crossing, and it made the travel day far less stressful.

How I would plan a Gili Meno trip

If I were planning a typical trip to Gili Meno, this is the version that makes the most sense:

  • Stay 2 nights / 3 days
  • Arrive by fast boat from Padang Bai
  • Spend one day on beach time, shore snorkelling, and sunset
  • Use the second full day for a boat snorkelling trip or diving
  • Get up early at least once for sunrise on the east coast
  • Keep your schedule lighter than you think you need to

That last point really matters. Gili Meno is at its best when you stop trying to over-plan it.
