Where to See the Sunrise and Sunset on Gili Meno

If you are trying to work out where to watch the sunrise and sunset on Gili Meno, the simple answer is this: go east for sunrise and west for sunset. That sounds obvious, but being on the right side of the island makes a big difference.

The Short Answer

One thing that makes Gili Meno especially good for sunrise and sunset is its size. It is a very small island with a perimeter of roughly 5 km, and you can walk all the way around it in around 90 minutes. It is even quicker by bike, although some sandy sections can be tiring to push through.

  • Best sunrise side: the east coast, especially around the quieter beaches north and south of the harbour area.
  • Best sunset side: the west coast, especially the beach stretches near the old Bounty jetty area and west-facing beach hotels.
  • Best all-round compromise: the north-east to north coast, where you can get soft morning light, easy swimming, and still walk to the west side later for sunset.

Because the island is so small, you do not need a perfect resort location to enjoy both during the same stay.

In fact, I stayed in the middle of the island at the fantastic Gili Meno Escape. That ended up being a great base because I could walk to either side of the island without much effort.

Why the East Coast Is Best for Sunrise

The east coast is the obvious sunrise side because it faces toward Lombok, so you get that first light coming over the water and mountains rather than across the side of the island. It also tends to feel calmer in the morning, with softer water, cleaner light, and fewer people around.

That matters because a good sunrise spot is not only about direction. It is also about atmosphere. On Gili Meno, the east side feels more peaceful and glassy early in the day, which is exactly what most people want at sunrise.

Best Sunrise Spots on Gili Meno

The East Coast Beaches Just North of the Harbour

This is probably the safest recommendation for most travellers. Gili Meno Port is the island’s main arrival point and acts as a useful landmark. From there, walking a little north gets you away from the boat activity without losing the east-facing view. You still get the sunrise over Lombok, but with a quieter stretch of sand.

The North-East Coast

If you want a more open feel and fewer signs of port activity, the north-east is arguably even better. It still catches the sunrise light beautifully, but feels more remote and less functional than the harbour area. It is also one of the better choices if you want your sunrise to turn into an early swim or snorkel.

Anywhere on the East Coast Where You Can See Lombok Clearly

This sounds vague, but on Gili Meno it is genuinely useful advice. Because the island is so small, the best sunrise is often less about a named viewpoint and more about finding a clean patch of beach with an uninterrupted view east. If you can see the Lombok silhouette clearly and you are not blocked by trees or moored boats, you are in a good sunrise position.

Why the West Coast Is Best for Sunset

The west coast is the classic sunset side on Gili Meno. This is where the light becomes warmer, the colours get more dramatic, and the whole scene feels more cinematic. On a clear evening, you can look out toward Gili Trawangan and even get that classic distant volcano silhouette feel that people associate with the Gilis.

That is the big difference between sunrise and sunset on Gili Meno. Sunrise is softer and quieter. Sunset feels bigger and more visual. The west side is also peaceful, but it has more of that end-of-day payoff.

The West Coast Beaches in General

This is the most reliable sunset advice of the whole guide. You do not need a secret viewpoint. You just need a west-facing beach. If you are staying anywhere inland or on the east side, it is absolutely worth making the walk across in late afternoon.

Near the Old Bounty Jetty / Former Pontoon Area

This is one of the most recognisable stretches on the west coast. Even if you are not specifically looking for a named point, it is a useful landmark for orienting yourself. It is also one of the best areas for a sunset walk, especially if you want something that feels scenic without being overdeveloped.

West-Facing Beach Bars, Bungalows, and Hotel Fronts

This is where Gili Meno differs from Gili Trawangan. The sunset scene is usually quieter and less about beanbags, music, and crowds. If you want a drink, a relaxed dinner, or a more romantic setup, choosing a west-facing beachfront property is a simple way to make sunset part of every evening.

So, Where Should You Stay?

If your whole trip is built around sunrise and sunset, I would not say you have to stay directly on one side of the island. Gili Meno is small enough that staying somewhere central works really well. That is exactly why my stay at Gili Meno Escape made sense.

If you care most about soft morning light, calm swims, and easy sunrise access, the east side is best. If you care most about ending every day with the best view, the west side is best. If you want balance, staying somewhere near the middle or on the north-east side is probably the smartest move.
